Mysterious Rumbling in So Cal

At around 9:15pm Tuesday March 3, Southern California residents from San Clemente to Cypress placed over 70 calls to 911 to report a strange rumbling, shaking sound and sensation). Sounds like an earthquake, right?

One problem: There wasn't any earthquake. There wasn't anything unusual going on at Vandenberg or Camp Pendleton. No one knows what caused the rumbling and shaking.

Groom Lake (a.k.a. Area 51) is no more than 300 miles NNE of San Clemente. I'm just sayin'...

Update March 18, 2009
Some seismologists think the rumbling might have been from a sonic boom--as it propagated too quickly to have been underground.
