Checkers, Anyone?

For Christmas 2011 the adults in my family all agreed participate in a hand-made gift exchange. I drew my brother's name and after discarding several ideas I knew were too ambitious for my own limited home-made gift-building skills, I settled on a plan to build a checkerboard of wood, from scratch. This too was beyond my limited skill set, but it sounded fun. And I decided to document the process regardless of how it turned out...which wasn't too bad!

Suzuki SX4 in the Snow

Suzuki SX4 at Timberline Lodge, Mt Hood, OR
First time in the snow with my 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover.

After driving my new 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover around town for couple of months and carefully following the owner's manual guidelines for the initial 600 mile break-in period, it was time for a trip up the mountain and, as it turned out, some snow!

A Bachelor's Guide to Twice-Baked Potatoes

As Thanksgiving approaches (midnight is in 42 minutes here on the America's Left Coast), I'm sipping a half-warm Coke, listening to digital Frank Sinatra Christmas music from a satellite 22,000 miles above Earth, reflecting fondly on good times from the past and looking forward to a great family get-together tomorrow.

My contribution to the Thanksgiving feast this year, as in two previous years is twice-baked potatoes.

Twice-Baked Potatoes
Twice-baked potatoes.

Preparing twice-baked potatoes is time-consuming, but it isn't difficult. And for the benefit of those who (like me) have well-meaning and culinarily-talented moms and sisters offering us recipes with incomprehensible abbreviations and fractions and bizarre ingredients like "lemon zest" (seriously: who came up with THAT?), I decided to document my twice-baked potato preparation in pictures and plain English and thus empower the common man.

Northern Exposure...

Remember "Northern Exposure"--the TV show that ran in the early 1990's? If you're as old as I am (41) you probably do. I used to watch the show now and again back when it originally aired, but I've had even more fun watching on DVD now that it's available that way.

Roslyn Cafe
The real Roslyn Cafe--the ornate painting on the side of the building features prominently in the Northern Exposure intro and in many episodes.

I had the opportunity to drive to Roslyn, Washington with my folks last week--while taking a few vacation days off work after Labor Day. We figured it would be fun to see the setting first-hand and maybe even track down some of the buildings and locations where filming took place.

Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas

The final encore at the Alison Krauss concert finished just about 3 hours ago (as I type this), but it was a concert I'll enjoy remembering for a long time to come.

Alison Krauss
Alison Krauss, of "Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas"

We arrived (my friend Al, my dad and me) at McMenamin's Edgefield Manor in Troutdale, OR (on the east fringe of the Portland metro area--the entrance to the Columbia River Gorge) at around 3:30pm to wait in a line growing longer by the minute, queuing up along a paved roadway inside the manor grounds.

Gates were scheduled to open at 5:00pm to the fenced-in, beautifully-maintained outdoor concert grounds at Edgefield. Imagine a golf course and you'll have an idea how beautiful the venue is.
